Mac vs PC
6) Are you being inundated with virus attacks?
Virus attacks and spyware have been around for years, but
they’re becoming more prevalent. There are a lot of
ways fighting them, but if you feel you’re losing
the battle, you want to seriously consider switching to
a Mac. There’s a bit of debate about how much safer
Macs are and why, but viruses are essentially a non-issue
on the Mac platform. There are two basic reasons. The first
is that the latest Macintosh operating system, Mac OS X
(the “X” is pronounced “ten”) is
very secure. It’s based on Unix, an operating system
which is a lot more resistant to being infected by viruses.
This is in contrast to Windows XP, the latest PC operating
system. While it is an improvement over previous Windows
operating systems, the default software that is typically
used with it (Outlook and Internet Explorer) has been revealed
to have many serious security flaws. Patches are released
to fix the errors, but they are fundamentally less safe
to use. The second main reason is that there are substantially
fewer viruses written for Macs. It can be argued that virus
writers don’t attack Macs because their market share
is so much less than PCs (certainly true), but it’s
also because it’s so much easier to write viruses
for PCs. If you’re going to stick with a PC with Windows
software, you need to take extra precaution against viruses
and spyware.
